Father accused of trying to sell daughter, child star of 'Slumdog Millionaire'
Like her on-screen character, Rubina comes from one of the slums of Mumbai, living in the Garib Nagar slum near Bandra station. She continues to live in a makeshift shack in the slums.[5] She lives with her father Rafiq, her sister Sana, her brother Abbas and her stepmother Munni. Rubina's biological mother, Khushi, left her father, along with Rubina and her two siblings, five years ago to marry "some rich person" and never returned until recently. Her father re-married and Rubina was raised by her father and stepmother.[10]
Following the success of Slumdog Millionaire at the 2009 Academy Awards, the Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority have recommended the children be rehoused, with an official saying the children had "brought laurels to the country" and deserved to be rewarded.[11] On 25 February 2009, the Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority announced that Azharuddin as well as Rubina would be given "free houses" so that they would no longer have to live in the Mumbai slum of Garib Nagar.[12] Following this announcement, Rubina's mother, Khushi, returned to claim Rubina and wishes to move in with her to the new flat.[10]
Soon after the success of Slumdog Millionaire, her life was again media focus when her father was arrested for allegedly attempting to sell her for US$290,000. However, in her book she defended her father and claims they were set up.
